Boat Camp is a summer program comprised of several week-long camps where rising 5th and 6th graders get a hands-on STEM experience designed to introduce them to marine engineering, shipbuilding, and the science behind boats and submarines. Through interactive activities, team-based challenges, and engineering projects, students explore concepts such as buoyancy, propulsion, and boat design while strengthening their problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and critical-thinking skills. Students gain insight into the maritime and defense industries and the diverse STEM career pathways available right here in Connecticut.

• Must be a entering 5th or 6th grade student in Fall (August/September) 2026
• Must have an interest in science or STEM
• Must be a resident of or attend a school in Hartford, Bloomfield, Windsor, East Hartford, Groton, New London, New Haven, Norwich, or any Indigenous or Tribal communities.

• Hours: 9:00am to 4:00pm
• Schedule: Each camp runs for 1 week, from Monday to Friday (capacity: 30 for each camp)
  
• Cost: The Program is $150 per student, per week. Financial aid is available for participants who meet economic eligibility criteria.

1. Is lunch provided? Yes! Lunch and snacks are provided daily. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions when completing the application for your child.
2. What should my child bring to camp? A water bottle, comfortable clothing suitable for hands-on activities, sneakers (no open-toed shoes for safety reasons), sunscreen and a hat for outdoor activities, any necessary medications (with proper documentation)
3. Are cell phones allowed? While campers are allowed to bring cell phones, they are expected to stay engaged in activities. We ask that phones be used only during designated break times.
4. Who will be supervising my child? Campers will be supervised by trained, First Aid Certified UConn staff and camp counselors. Safety is our top priority, and all staff undergo extensive training.
5. Will my child be in the water? While there are marine-based activities, children will not be swimming during camp. All safety precautions will be followed.
6. What if my child has allergies or medical needs? Please note any allergies or medical concerns on the application when registering your child. We will work with parents to ensure a safe experience for all campers.
7. What happens if there is bad weather? Boat Camp has indoor and covered activities planned in case of inclement weather.
